Share the Journey Walk 2018

Share the Journey – CAFOD walk

On Wednesday 13th June 2018 Sacred Heart Secondary students from Year 7 and Year 8 went on a walk around Locke Park in Redcar. This was no ordinary walk, this walk was to raise awareness for people who are forced to flee their homes, towns and countries through war and persecution. As we share the journey, we will think about the difficult journeys people are forced to make.

Did you know?
- More people are on the move now than ever before. Every minute 20 people around the world are newly displaced.
- Half of the world’s refugees are children, and thousands take flight without the protection of parents or other family members.
-Three out of four of the world’s refugees are hosted by developing counties.

Pope Francis launched Share the Journey, a new global campaign to stand up for the rights of refugees and migrants. In support of the campaign, CAFOD are asking Catholics in England and Wales to walk 24,900 miles (in total, not each!) - the distance around the whole world, to show support for the millions of people who are forced to flee their homes every year.

Sacred Heart Secondary teamed up with CAFOD on Wednesday 13th June to walk some of the 24,900.
In one morning we managed to accumulate 300 miles for CAFOD.

Whilst speaking to the students on the walk, they said they felt proud to be raising awareness, as it made them thankful for the things they have and humbled to think how lucky they are. It has given them a greater respect for refugees, with some students commenting that it is impossible to understand what the refugees are going through.

When the students returned to the Academy, they were asked to write a message of support to a refugee, letting them know that we are thinking about them and their families in our prayers.

One student wrote, “You are in my thoughts and in my heart. I hope you keep your strength and patience, as we are all working to get you out of this situation.”

Another wrote, “I would not like to be in your situation and I pray you have strength in this difficult time”.
